Xi’an International Airport first route towards Portugal starts operation from August 30th 2019. The PEK-XIY-LIS route is the only direct route between China and Portugal. With the widebody aircraft A330-200, Beijing Capital Airlines operates three times per week. The airline now has 89 aircrafts flying to 66 destinations. The flight will take off from Xi’an at 12:10 pm and arrive at Lisbon at 7:15 pm local time. The return flight will take off at 10:55 pm and back to Xi’an at 6:15 pm.

Lisbon is the 8th new foreign destinations introduced by Xi’an since 2019, which increased the total number of international routes of Xi’an airport to 74. Zhonghua Ma, the Vice President of Xi’an airport, said: 'Our goal is to make Xi’an international airport a great transit hub in Northern China and mainly serve passengers from the western area. The new route to Lisbon will bring new opportunities and broader developments between the two countries.'

According to the Xinhua News, Beijing Capital Airlines once opened the route HGH-PEK-LIS in July 2017. However, it was suspended in October 2018. Chinese Ambassador to Portugal Run Cai indicated that 2019 is the 40th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations between China and Portugal. The resumption of this direct flight will definitely promote the personnel exchange of the two countries.

Xi’an airport has expended its international network to 60 foreign destinations. 'We are trying to introduce more intercontinental routes toward Europe, the Middle East and central-Asia.' said by the Vice President, 'For Europe， we aimed to increase the capacity by not only adding more destinations but also increasing the flight frequencies. As for the Middle East, we are putting effort to launch a new flight between Istanbul and Xi’an within this year. In addition, we also expect more connections with the Central-Asian countries.'
